2 6 Ja n 20 11 Substellar companions and the formation of hot subdwarf stars

چکیده
We give a brief review over the observational evidence for close substellar companions to hot subdwarf stars. The formation of these core helium-burning objects requires huge mass loss of their red giant progenitors. It has been suggested that besides stellar companions substellar objects in close orbits may be able to trigger this mass loss. Such objects can be easily detected around hot subdwarf stars by medium or high resolution spectroscopy with an RV accuracy at the kms−1-level. Eclipsing systems of HW Vir type stick out of transit surveys because of their characteristic light curves. The best evidence that substellar objects in close orbits around sdBs exist and that they are able to trigger the required mass loss is provided by the eclipsing system SDSS J0820+0008, which was found in the course of the MUCHFUSS project. Furthermore, several candidate systems have been discovered.

Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes are the remnants of massive stars, which ended their lives in supernova explosions. These exotic objects can only be studied in relatively rare cases. If they are interacting with close companions they become bright X-ray sources. If they are neutron stars, they may be detected as pulsars. Only a few hundred such systems are presently known in the Gala...
متن کاملAre All Hot Subdwarf Stars in Close Binaries?
We discuss whether the hypothesis that “all (or most) subdwarfs are in close binaries” is supported by the frequently reported observations of photometrically or spectroscopically composite character of many hot subdwarf stars. By way of a possible counter-argument, we focus on resolved companions (optical pairs) of hot subdwarf stars. On a statistical basis, many of these are physically associ...

Context. Only two planetary systems around old ms-pulsars are currently known. Young radio pulsars and radio-quiet neutron stars cannot be covered by the usually-applied radio pulse timing technique. However, finding substellar companions around these neutron stars would be of great interest – not only because of the companion’s possible exotic formation but also due to the potential access to ...
متن کاملThe detection of binary companions to subdwarf B stars ?
Intermediate dispersion spectroscopy of a sample of 40 hot subdwarf B stars between 5500 A and 9000 A has been obtained. The sample includes a large fraction of targets which have been studied photometrically. Seven targets show strong lines due to the infrared Ca ii triplet, the unequivocal signature of a cool companion. The positive Ca ii identiications include known photometric binaries and ...
متن کاملThe Nature of the Late - Type Companions in Hot Sub - Dwarf Composite - Spectrum Binaries
We present the results of a study of the late-type companions in hot subdwarf composite spectrum binaries. The exact nature of these late-type companions has been disputed in the literature — some argue that they are main sequence stars, and others have claimed they are subgiants. To determine the properties of the late-type companions, we first conducted a survey utilizing the Two Micron All S...
